Common Hornbeam An attractive deciduous feature tree with a broad-domed crown and smooth pale grey bark. Its leaves are distinctively ribbed and serrated. Provides autumn interest in the garden as it changes from dark green to yellow. Yellow catkins are prominent in spring. This variety often has its canopy raised to leave a clear trunk at the base. Great as a feature tree for autumn colour. When clipped it makes an attractive hedge. Also suitable for colder climate gardens, should cope with frosts and light snow. While it prefers a humus rich well-drained soil, this variety adopts well to different soil types. Feed well in late winter for best results. For full sun or part shade. |
