Acer buergerianum

Foliage Deciduous
Form Branches Ascending
Mature Size 9 x 6m
Family Aceraceae
Trident Maple

This is a small deciduous tree with ascending branches when young, maturing to a more rounded canopy. Leaves are small, triangular and tri lobed. New spring foliage is a rich bronzy-red colour maturing to a dark green in summer. In autumn foliage turns yellow to orange to red. Bark is a pale grey-brown orange and appears scaly or flaky. Flowers are green and inconspicuous.

Regarded as a trouble-free tree, it is known for good drought tolerance but favours some summer irrigation in south-eastern Australia. Grown with a central leader it makes a good street tree. Most suitable for small landscapes and domestic gardens offering great autumn colour. In Australia, there have been problems selecting A. buergerianum suitable as street trees; most nursery-grown trees branch very low, and lack a central leader. If the tree is grown after formative pruning, an excellent shape can be planted: Trident Maple must be purchased as a single-leader tree

Likes a humus rich soil, protected from hot winds. Formative pruning is essential for a good specimen.
