Choosing the right tree is especially important when you are looking to screen off neighbours, high structures or other properties. Narrow garden beds are tricky - and care has to be taken both in terms of planting the right container-size tree to fit the planting space and in the selection of the tree with the right form to ensure it can grow unrestricted to flourish.

There are a number of excellent trees to consider, and these are fastigiate in form which means that they grow more upright than outwards. Our recommendations here offer something for every style, whether you require, native evergreen or deciduous. All are suitable for tight spaces. Ensuring you can plant correctly in your allocated space is the reason why we offer a number of sizes in many tree lines, so talk to us if you are in any doubt.

This tree has a narrow growth habit with luscious shiny green leaves that hang vertically from branches. An attractive curl in the foliage adds further interest and the slender, columnar shape lends itself well to tight spaces. In autumn, leaves turn a purpley-red colour and spring brings a beautiful display of lovely white flowers followed by small, russet coloured fruits. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L 150L 200L
A smaller tree which is more upright than it is wide, forming a tear drop shape with age. It offers the same beautiful characteristics as straight L. tulipifera but its growth habit is much narrower with erect, upright growing branches. From late spring to summer, large yellowish-green, tulip-like flowers decorated with orange markings appear. In autumn the large lime green leaves turn a rich, golden-yellow before falling. This variety is suitable for smaller gardens due to its narrow growth habit. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L
This is a new selection of evergreen Magnolia suitable for little spaces in full sun or part shade. 'Sweet Spire' grows upright and slim with dark green leaves. It produces creamy white flowers from spring to autumn. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L
This is a flashy crimson foliaged maple with dense upright branching. It has a compact growth habit with large crimson leaves in summer turning to gold and orange in autumn. Adds great colour contrast foliage. This is a small tree with grey-black bark that is lightly textured. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 200L
This Lilly Pilly is a better form than the narrow growing 'Pinnacle' due to its dense foliage and naturally columnar form. Foliage is a mid-green colour and fruits are reddish-pink. As the name suggests it is a great selection for narrow spaces. 30cm/14L 40cm/27L 50cm/52L
This tree has an unusual growth habit, the branches intertwine with each other and grow inwards thus producing an erect habit. The leaves are triangular shape and have a serrated edge. They change from green to butter yellow in autumn. The ornamental white trunk sheds in sheets paper thin. It has deep black fissures in the lower trunk. This tree looks fantastic during its dormant period. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L
This variety of Ginkgo, with its natural pyramidal growth habit, is ideal for use in hedging, driveways and avenues. It's a hardy and low-maintenance tree, providing typically fan-shaped foliage that turns from green to a stunning golden-yellow in autumn. 40cm/27L
This is a small shrub with medium frost tolerance for use as a dense narrow flowering screen. Preferring full sun to light shade it produces upright lemon brush-like flowers from late summer to winter. Responds well to pruning. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L
A relatively fast grower, reaching approximately 5m in the first 10 years. Mid green horizontal branchlets droop slightly and the lush, cedar-scented foliage is flat and dense in habit making it ideal for creating a privacy screen or windbreak in a small space as it will reach a width of only 1.5 metres. It has a compact conical, upright growth habit and responds well to pruning, even reshooting from bare wood after a hard prune. Thuja is immune to canker disease. 30cm/14L 40cm/27L 50cm/52L
The Italian Pencil Pine is an excellent, low maintenance choice for creating a formal look in areas where space is limited. This variety has a dense, upright, columnar growth habit and requires very little to no pruning to maintain its shape. Foliage is aromatic with a blue-green shade and produces less fruit than many other pencil pine selections. 50cm/52L
This is a narrow growing Bottlebrush great for tight planting spots. It provides all the usual colour and texture qualities of Callistemon, flowering from spring to autumn but with the benefit of being able to use to as a compact alternative in positions that are narrower. Flowers are red and numerous over the warmer months. Of course it can also be used as a screen or hedge to attract birds, bees and butterflies into the garden. 40cm/27L
