Layered landscapes which embrace diversity of foliage, flower, colour and texture, can often feature a bird attracting tree or two if you are looking to increase the presence of bird life in your landscape.  Many native trees already provide visual year-round interest due to their brightly coloured flowers and attractive grey-green foliage but these can also attract nesting and nectar eating birds. Here is a sample of trees that do just that.

This is an attractive densely canopied tree that produces densely packed powdery-red flowers that are shaped like small bells during the summer months. This is a stunning native tree that is bird, butterfly and insect attracting. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L
This tree has a smooth trunk with cream to grey coloured bark which sheds in flakes. It has narrow shaped green leaves and as it matures, forms a large open canopy. From Autumn to Spring, an abundance of red flowers appear in clusters of three attracting a variety of birdlife. 40cm/27L
This is a small to medium sized shade tree offering glossy green foliage and pretty clusters of salmon pink, bell-shaped flowers in Summer. As a grafted tree, it is more compact in size which makes it highly suitable for domestic landscapes. Flowers are bird attracting. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L
A beautiful, tall growing Corymbia (syn. Eucalyptus) with a distinctive, often powdery white to grey coloured bark which curls and flakes off in spring. Its leaves are green, long and slender with an amazing, strong lemon fragrance when crushed. Its strong scent is a distinguishing attribute, with the essential oils produced from this variety often being used in fragrances as well as insect repellents. In summer and autumn, feathery white flowers appear, making it a good source of food for honey bees. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L
This Australian native tree is small to medium in height with a compact, spreading habit. Technically this is a more compact growing form of the regular Yellow Gum Eucalyptus but produces bigger flowers. It has a nice spreading habit with beautiful olive-grey spear-shaped foliage. Similar to 'Rosea', it produces large pink-red, bird attracting flowers from late winter to spring and grows to a similar height with a good canopy. 40cm/27L
A versatile, fast growing shrub with fine, deep purple foliage forming a graceful, weeping habit with its purple-pink new growth. In late spring and summer, bronze buds open to a profusion of long-lasting snowy white flowers. A great Australian native adaptable to a variety of soil types and conditions and can be used as a screen, hedge or specimen plant. 40cm/27L
This is a narrow growing Bottlebrush great for tight planting spots. It provides all the usual colour and texture qualities of Callistemon, flowering from spring to autumn but with the benefit of being able to use to as a compact alternative in positions that are narrower. Flowers are red and numerous over the warmer months. Of course it can also be used as a screen or hedge to attract birds, bees and butterflies into the garden. 40cm/27L
This tree has a corky light brown bark that has deep fissures.The leaves are thin green needles like a pine tree. There are female and male trees with gold male flowers in Autumn and female rounded warty cones. In Winter the branchlets turn a beautiful copper colour. 40cm/27L
This Australian native tree grows naturally down the central tablelands of New South Wales to Victoria, and across as far as Ararat. A tough tree, it is capable of tolerating difficult, dry stony soils. Juvenile foliage is oval in shape and grey-green in colour whilst the mature, adult leaves are more ovate. The short trunk can be smooth or box-like (fissured). Flowering occurs from September to January during which small white flowers appear. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L
This medium-sized Australian native tree originates from the elevated areas of the Wallangarra area in northern New South Wales. It is relatively fast growing with a short smooth trunk which is powdery white to grey in appearance and sheds. The broad, spreading crown has an open, weeping habit and bears narrow, shiny green leaves providing beautiful, dappled shade. In spring and summer, small white flowers appear followed by little oval gumnuts. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L
Eucalyptus caesia is one of the best-known eucalypts. This species grows as a small tree of about 6-9 metres in height. perfect for residential gardens and native landscapes with limited space. It has deep green foliage and large flowers usually pink to red in colour. Flowering occurs in winter and spring. Flowers are followed by large, urn-shaped gumnuts. Flowering Period: May through September. 40cm/27L 100L
